Electional astrology is a branch of traditional astrology focused on selecting the most auspicious times to begin important actions or events. Unlike natal astrology (which analyzes your birth chart) or [horary astrology](/blog/posts/what-is-horary-astrology) (which answers specific questions), electional astrology is proactive: it chooses a moment whose chart supports your goal, rather than reacting to one.

At its core, electional astrology rests on the traditional premise that the chart of a beginning describes what follows from it. By examining the positions of the Moon, planets, and angles (like the Ascendant and Midheaven), practitioners look for windows that emphasize supportive testimony and avoid obvious obstacles. It is about choosing well within the options you actually have, not predicting the future.

**Why use it?** In a world full of uncertainties, electional astrology adds a layer of intentionality. It has been used for centuries to time weddings, business launches, journeys, contracts, and even battles. The idea is to avoid malefic influences (like stressful planetary aspects) and favor benefic ones (such as supportive aspects from Jupiter or Venus). It is a symbolic timing practice: it complements practical planning and professional advice and never replaces them.

## Core principles of electional astrology

Traditional electional texts, from Sahl ibn Bishr's ninth-century *On Elections* to William Lilly and Jean-Baptiste Morin in the seventeenth century, agree on a short list of priorities:

- **A strong, unhindered Moon.** The Moon should not be void of course, should apply to a benefic or to the ruler of the matter, and should be free of hard contact with Mars or Saturn. Many astrologers prefer a waxing Moon for matters you want to grow.

- **A strong Ascendant and ruler.** The rising sign and its ruler describe the venture itself, so they should be dignified, direct, and not combust.

- **The house of the matter.** Strengthen the house that rules the purpose and its ruler: the 7th for marriage and contracts, the 10th for career and public launches, the 2nd for money, the 4th for property.

- **Benefics on the angles, malefics kept quiet.** Jupiter or Venus near the Ascendant or Midheaven is a classic aim; Mars or Saturn on the angles is avoided unless well received or serving the purpose.

- **Avoid known troubles.** Common cautions include eclipse periods, the Moon in the *via combusta* (roughly 15° Libra to 15° Scorpio), and, for contracts and communication, a retrograde Mercury.

- **Fit the people involved.** Where birth data exist, many astrologers tie the election to the natal chart; Morin held that the nativity outweighs any election.

A perfect election rarely exists inside a real calendar. In practice the astrologer ranks candidate times, accepts minor flaws, and protects the factors that matter most for the specific purpose.

## A brief history of electional astrology

Choosing a favorable start is one of the oldest uses of astrology. Hellenistic astrologers judged *inceptions*, the chart for the beginning of a matter. Astrologers writing in Arabic, notably Sahl ibn Bishr, set out detailed rules for elections that passed into medieval Latin astrology, and in India the parallel tradition of **muhurta** is still widely used to time weddings, openings, and ceremonies.

Rulers made use of the art. Tacitus's *Annals* describe the Roman emperor Tiberius's reliance on the astrologer Thrasyllus. In Renaissance England, John Dee, mathematician and astrologer, is widely reported to have chosen 15 January 1559 for the coronation of Elizabeth I, and he advised her court on other matters, including voyages.

The best-documented modern case is the Reagan White House. Former Chief of Staff Donald Regan revealed in his 1988 memoir *For the Record* that major presidential schedules had been checked in advance with an astrologer in San Francisco. The astrologer, Joan Quigley, described her timing advice for summits, press conferences, and travel in *What Does Joan Say?* (1990). Nancy Reagan, who had sought this advice after the 1981 assassination attempt, wrote in *My Turn* (1989): "While astrology was a factor in determining Ronnie's schedule, it was never the only one."

Other accounts are less well documented. The French astrologer Élizabeth Teissier said she advised President François Mitterrand, including during the Gulf War period, and accounts of Indian political history report that Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sometimes adjusted ceremonies on astrological advice. These reports show that timing has long been part of how some leaders made decisions; they do not show that the elections worked.

## Common types of elections

Each purpose emphasizes different houses and planets. Vox Stella's [Election workspace](/election) scans date ranges with a dedicated model for each of these:

- **Marriage:** the 7th house, Venus, and a well-supported Moon. See the [wedding election guide](/blog/posts/wedding-election-astrology-alpha-vs-beta).

- **Business launches:** the Moon, the angles, and the planet that ends up in charge of the chart. See [election astrology for business launches](/blog/posts/election-astrology-business-launch-guide).

- **Contracts and legal action:** Mercury, the 7th house, and clear, unafflicted communication.

- **Property:** the 4th house and the timing of offers, listings, contracts, and closings. See [real estate timing astrology](/blog/posts/real-estate-timing-astrology-estate-timing-model).

- **Publishing and social media:** Mercury, the 11th house, and visibility. See [astrological elections for social media](/blog/posts/harnessing-astrological-elections-social-media-virality).

- **Journeys, haircuts and beautification, conception, and surgery:** traditional rules specific to each, including the medical rule described below.

## Surgery Election in Vox Stella

Medical elections are one of the oldest branches of the art. Vox Stella's **Surgery Election** applies the classical rules found in Jean-Baptiste Morin's *Astrologia Gallica* to rank candidate times for planned procedures. It is a symbolic timing reference only: it cannot make a procedure safer, it is not medical advice, and medically necessary or urgent care should never be delayed for astrological timing.

### How It Works

- Select a date range, location, procedure type (cutting, purging, diagnostic), and the body area involved.

- The tool scans candidate moments and scores them based on classical criteria: condition of the Moon, strength of the Ascendant, placement of benefics and malefics, and other timing considerations.

- Results surface the highest-ranked slices of time in your window along with succinct reasons (e.g., "Jupiter in 10th", "Moon applying to benefic", "Avoid: Moon in body's sign").

### With or Without Natal Chart

- **With natal:** Honors Morin's principle that the nativity is supreme, optionally blending support from Solar/Lunar Returns and prioritizing transits that cooperate with the patient's chart.

- **Without natal:** Switches to a standalone election, applying universal rules (especially Moon and angular planet considerations) to the information available.

### What It Avoids

- Cutting when the Moon is in the sign ruling the body part (e.g., heart/Leo, knees/Capricorn), the traditional medical-election rule.

- The Moon in the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses (illness, crisis, confinement) at the moment of action.

- Malefics (Saturn, Mars) on the angles (especially Ascendant and Midheaven), unless Mars is serving a useful role for cutting and is well-conditioned.

### What It Seeks

- A strong, well-aspected Moon in favorable signs or houses.

- Benefics like Jupiter or Venus on the angles or in helpful positions.

- Harmonious aspects between the main significators.

Morin emphasizes that human skill and diligence matter most: choose a capable surgeon, prepare well, and follow medical advice. The date of a procedure is a medical decision first.

## Limits of electional astrology

Electional astrology is a traditional, symbolic practice. Controlled scientific studies have not supported astrology's claims, and no election can guarantee an outcome. Use it to choose thoughtfully among practical options, keep notes of what you chose and why, and let real-world constraints, such as people's availability, legal deadlines, or medical advice, come first.
